The North Face 100, CamSur
For my first foray into the 21km and above running events I decided to test myself in the 2011 The North Face 100 event held in Camarines Sur. I brought my family, Yz and Fedhz along for the event as well. My initial plan was to run the entire race with them but unfortunately the first leg (4-5km) of the race involved climbing Mt. Isarog which was too treacherous for Yz. So I met up with them at the first checkpoint of the race which was on the descent from Mt. Isarog.
I try to teach Yz all the things I know about life, and I find the best way to do this is to simply lead by example. If there’s anything I learned about parenting so far is that kids seldom listen to what you say, but take a lot out off your actions and demeanor. This time around I wanted her to learn that value of perseverance and not giving up. I also want to create positive moments that she will remember for the rest of her life… I feel that finishing a 22km trail run at 4 yrs old is a good and reinforcing memory to have.
As a parent I was extremely proud that she didn’t complain, amidst the heat and humidity. She was actually enjoying the experience, which gave me that extra umph! I needed to finish the race. I look forward to making more memories such a this with my family.
